The Art of Capturing Flowers: Photography & Videography tips for Florists
What is "The Art of Capturing Flowers”?
A guide to VERY basic photography & iPhone filming for floral design. On my Instagram, I have been covering the most basic elements that I am familiar with, using tools that the average floral designer may already have at home!
I am far from a professional photographer- but I AM a florist who loves to capture her own work. I have enjoyed playing with the two mediums together, it’s all a part of the fun for me, & I wanted to share the tips I have learned with you!
Please check out my IG page (link below) to learn more, or reach out via my contact page if you want a little extra guidance OR just don’t know where to start, I would love to book a 1-1 session (in person or online) to come alongside you while we dive into your photography or videography journey with flowers.
Tools for Success
-
Backdrops
My personal favorite tools to use (after much trial & error with fabric, canvas, all the things). Shop my favorite brands & colors below.
-
Tripods
A needed small but mighty tool to allow you to capture your work without needing another pal in the room. Below is just one that I have tried, and hope to recommend more soon.
-
Film Gear
I am just learning how to use film myself (yay!) but am already in love. Here are some of the items I use for my 35mm camera.

T-Shaped Backdrop Stand
Super great for hanging fabrics! You can clip the fabric on lots of points along the top. Also great if you have less space.
Backdrop Stand 12ft x 10ft
Sturdy but does not come with sandbags! Love how tall this version is.
Backdrop Stand 10ft x 7ft
The stand that I have had for years! Does it all, sturdy with the added sandbags, and really just a solid basic design. Slightly shorter.
Savage Seamless Paper Backdrop Mocha
A GREAT neutral color that comes off more brown / almost mauve or purple in real life. Warm overall.
Phone Tripod 70” to 85'“
Very similar to the tripod I have used for years! Perfect for shooting your work or BTS without needing another hand. Pros of this model- there are different heights to choose from (I always go for something at least up to my chest so I can angle down if needed) AND it has a small base/foot
Savage Seamless Paper Backdrop Chestnut
My FAVORITE and go to paper color. A dark brown that leans purple or red sometimes.
Kodak Gold 200 Film
My FAVORITE and go to budget film stock to use. Really wonderful warm colors without being too bright. Comes in a 3 pack.
Savage Seamless Paper Backdrop Pecan
A super nice neutral color that leans a little more cool. Slightly less colorful then it’s Mocha counterpart, but similar.
Kodak UltraMax 400 Film
Another great budget option. Better in low light then the 200 series! Creates vivid color, a little more bright on the greens and reds.
