The Art of Seasonal Flowers: Why Working With Nature Creates the Most Stunning Designs

When it comes to working with flowers, there’s one truth I stick by consistently: nature always knows best. As a florist who approaches design as an art form, I believe that working with seasonal flowers isn’t just a choice—it’s the key to creating arrangements that feel alive, expressive, and deeply connected to their surroundings. It’s like getting to use the very best quality paint, with the highest pigment, with the softest brushes. Whether you’re planning a wedding in California or a destination event in Europe, embracing the natural rhythm of the seasons will always result in the most breathtaking floral designs.

Why Seasonal Flowers Matter

Seasonal blooms are at their peak in beauty, personality, variety, and longevity. When flowers are grown in their natural season, they require fewer artificial interventions, making them not only fresher but also more sustainable. Using in-season flowers means your wedding florals can much more effortlessly harmonize with the time of year and setting of your event. Why not use the aspens that are right outside the door of your Colorado event, or the dried golden grass along the California hills in summer? You can bring all the best of nature inside with creativity and the right artistic tough.
Beyond their aesthetic advantages, seasonal flowers also offer a more eco-conscious approach to floral design. By sourcing locally and avoiding out-of-season imports, we can reduce the carbon footprint of your wedding while supporting small flower farms that grow unique, heirloom varieties you won’t find otherwise.

The Beauty of Seasonal Wedding Flowers

Each season brings its own palette of blooms, textures, and moods. Here’s what you can expect from each time of year:

Spring: Romantic, Fresh & Full of Life

Spring weddings are a dream for flower lovers, and florists of course. The season brings an abundance of delicate, ruffled blooms that evoke romance and renewal. Some of my favorite springtime flowers include:
  • Ranunculus – Layered petals that feel painterly
  • Sweet Peas – Fragrant and whimsical with cascading tendrils
  • Fritillaria – swirling swooping tiny blooms that look like fairies
  • Tulips – Classic yet versatile, available in endless hues, the parrot varieties are my personal favorite
  • Iris – the most ruffled, complex blooms you’ll ever see
  • Pansys – the pattern alone on these sweet tiny blooms always makes me so happy

Summer: Colorful, Sunny, Rich

Summer weddings allow for an explosion of color and texture. This is the time for dramatic, oversized blooms and striking greenery. Standout summer flowers include:
  • Dahlias – Large, sculptural blooms in a spectrum of shades and petal shapes, these are always my heavy hitters of the season
  • Zinnias – A sunny face that contains multitudes of color within a single field
  • Nicotiana – Bell shaped flowers that tower over most of the garden
  • Allium – the variety of shapes and sizes of these little ball flowers always surprises me
  • Cosmos – Delicate petals with airy stems, the stems dance and sway so perfectly
  • Foxglove – Tall, picturesque blooms that remind me of English gardens
  • Serracenia – These “snake flowers” are the cherry on top of any design for me, trumpet shaped in the most intriguing way, with a full spectrum of greens

Autumn: Moody, Textural & Earthy

Fall florals are all about depth, warmth, and a sense of abundance. This season allows for richer tones, textural elements, and unexpected foliage. Some autumn favorites include:
  • Chrysanthemums – Highly detailed petals and endless variety, the heirloom varieties are my favories
  • Japanese Anemones – The cosmo of the fall, they are the perfect dancers
  • Amaranthus – Everyones favorite cascading bloom
  • Foliage & Branches – The possibiliesi are endless here, fall gifts us the most varied foliage palette with chartreuse greens, deep browns, reds, and everything in between

Winter: Elegant, Minimal & Ethereal

Winter weddings may have fewer floral varieties, but they offer a unique opportunity for creative and refined designs. Classic winter floral elements include:
  • Hellebores – The star shape of each bloom is perfection
  • Paperwhites & Narcissus – Fragrant and timeless
  • Amaryllis – The winter flower star, the large star shapes come in a variety of colors and even newly created shapes that stun

Designing with the Seasons

When I create floral designs, I approach them as a painter would a canvas—layering color, movement, and texture to create something truly artful. Using seasonal flowers ensures that every arrangement feels natural, organic, and seamlessly woven into the setting.
If you’re planning your wedding and wondering what’s in season, I would love to help guide you toward the most stunning, seasonally inspired florals. Whether it’s an airy spring bouquet, a bold summer tablescape, or a moody autumn installation, I believe the best designs come from embracing the beauty of the natural world and letting each stem tell it’s story.
